Our parents were friends before we were born and then we became friends. Lily is a private chef in the Bay Area and has cooked at places such as Chez Panisse, Post Ranch Inn, Esalen, Lucques and Mozza. It has been so special to watch my friend thrive in her culinary world in the Bay Area. Her approach to food and feeding others is all about nourishment - in the making of it and in the ingredients. Since leaving Chez after the pandemic, Eating with Lily, her catering and private chef business has flourished. We have a handful of mutual friends but apart from that connection, I was mesmerized by her approach to food and cooking. Her interests in food, plants, sound, and scent are woven together in her project Moss Face. In one of her Instagram posts she introduces a bottle of her homemade mead: “This mead is all about love, unwrapping bandages and blowing kisses with strangers in kayaks.” She goes on to describe the herbs she used in the blend. It is one example of how food is used as a vehicle for exploration of a different realm. We had a lovely chat over the phone where I learned about her exploration into these different dimension as well as her newest life chapter – perfume school in Grasse, France! She used to be a recipe contributor to NYT Cooking and has a collection of 1,657 vegetarian recipes on NYT Cooking. I recently got to speak with her at her lovely home in LA about her work as a cookbook author for the last 50 years, her path to vegetarianism and thoughts about the veggie culture now, and her French, Tex-Mex, and California influences. This venture grew out of a desire to take care of friends at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown and has grown into a community effort that encompasses the whole city! After Sarah and I spoke I decided that Gaskins is my favorite restaurant in the Hudson Valley. Everything on the menu is simple and comforting and made with local ingredients. When I ate at Gaskins for dinner, the dish that I loved the most (and still think about) was an appetizer of fresh marinated heirloom and sungold tomatoes, basil, and peaches with crispy bits of chorizo. The idea of planning, recipe testing, selling tickets and preparing for something that could get cancelled by one covid test has held me back. So, after a long hiatus, I finally felt ready to host another dinner at the end of the summer of in 2022. While working at an inn in the Loire Valley for a month, I had the idea to do a feast with produce that all happens to be orange - fall’s bounty. I typically host these during the summer which is my favorite season to cook in. This year however, I was on the east coast for half of the summer and when I got back I was very busy with work. So a Fall feast came about! It was exciting to make a menu around a different season where warmth could be part of the menu (rather than being part of the weather!). A very sweet group of friends and family gathered at my godparents’ house in View Park, Los Angeles where I hosted one of my first pop-up dinners back in 2017 before so much of culinary career had taken place. I felt my growth in this dinner, in the menu and in the friends who were present. It is so special to have people who want to eat my food, cook with me, and open their home in honor of a delicious meal. I love to cook! So it’s very exciting when I have the chance to collaborate with a friend who has a similar food sensibility to me. For my recent pop-up I wanted to create a menu with my good friend Giuliana Sarto. We met last year through the private chef world and have been working together a lot this year in a catering setting so I already knew we worked well together. The process of planning, recipe testing, prepping, and shopping together was so fun and fulfilling. Summer At the end of June I hosted a pop-up at one of my favorite spaces,&nbsp;Fung &amp; Blatt. Alice Fung and Michael Blatt are two incredible architects who have a lovely studio in Highland Park, Los Angeles. The roll up garage door to their studio opens onto a bamboo lined garden which makes it an ideal space to gather friends. In the spring, Alice reached out to me and asked if I’d like to do a pop-up sometime soon so I planned for a summer solstice celebration. Incorporating my favorite ingredients of the early summer, I crafted a menu that would work for a limited kitchen setup and an al fresco dining experience. One of my favorite things about this pop-up was getting to work with my chef friend Saehee Cho. We met when I interviewed her for Moonbeam Kitchen in the spring of 2021! She was the perfect cashier/assistant who was able to anticipate all of my needs. She also somehow managed to not be in any of the photos so I added an iphone photo of us together at the bottom of this page :)&nbsp; As always when I host a pop-up, I’m blown away by how many friends and people in my community show up to support and enjoy my food. It makes all the hard work of preparing for the event worth it. It’s special to see all the people I love in one place (dogs too). Thank you to everyone who came and bought a sandwich, to Malka and Davy for letting me use their oven to bake the focaccia, to Alice and Michael, to Lauren for taking all the photos and being the official taste tester, and to Saehee for all her help! Collaboration is usually the thing that inspires me to create something new. I met Alissa Rothman while collecting materials for my pandemic archival book in 2020 and we became friends. I knew she would be a good collaborator as we both are devoted to slow food and the farmer’s market.&nbsp; After seeing her ceramics I knew I wanted to do a dinner that featured her pieces. So after a few dinners at my house, we came up with an end of summer menu and an idea for ceramics wine cups that our guests could take home. We hosted the dinner in Palms, Los Angeles, at the same house I hosted my first pop-up at, in September 2017. After 5 years of cooking as a private chef and at a couple restaurants, it was very exciting to host again at this space - a culmination of sorts. This al fresco gathering of new friends and old friends after a lack of this type of event felt so good. working on SCRAPBOOK in December 2020. I wanted to collect food-related documents from during quarantine because I saw that other people in the food industry had been keeping track of time in the same way I was. Some of them were keeping a journal of meals they had made during quarantine, some were making and delivering food to people, and lots of people were supporting restaurants by ordering take-out. I wanted to have an archive to show these patterns of behavior; our shared humanity while we were separated. I emailed some friends in the food industry, and then decided to open up the call for submissions to people on Instagram. The collection phase lasted 5 months, from December 2020-April 2021, during which I received submissions from chefs I admire, strangers with whom I’ve since become friends, and close friends as well. I worked with my friend Alex Arzt who runs the printing press&nbsp;A Magic Mountain Press in Oakland, CA. We had monthly video calls to figure out what the book would look like and how we’d organize it. My friend Mars Rojas helped with the book design, and then after a little over a year of work, Alex began printing the books in February 2022. The book is now available to order here and at a few bookstores in LA and one in NYC (I’ve listed the stockists at the bottom of this page).&nbsp;On April 2nd, 2022 I celebrated the release of SCRAPBOOK! It was special to me to be able to celebrate this project in person exactly two years since the pandemic began, in the same space I’d last hosted my last party. I made green olive and rosemary focaccia, cashew herb dip with spring crudites from the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market. Sunny donated some of their delicious tahini dip, and Michelle Boulos of No Good Cakes made an incredible vegan rosewater and passionfruit cake. Every Monday I sent an email to a growing number of family and friends who bought me out of pasta every time. I also posted my offerings on Instagram, where my mom’s watercolor posters were the main attraction. On Fridays and Saturdays I packed ice packs, pasta and sauce into a small cooler and drove all over town delivering the goods. I usually ended up standing on the doorstep of a friend’s to chat.
